Direct cremations: making the right choice for your family - as seen in the Stratford Herald newspaper
April 28, 2026As a family-owned business with three generations of experience, R. Locke & Son provides dedicated and compassionate funeral care to our local community. We are committed to offering respectful, professional guidance tailored to your specific requirements, from the initial arrangements through to aftercare and bereavement support.
Choosing the right farewell is a deeply personal decision and we’ll help you make an informed choice that best suits you and your family. Our services range from full traditional funerals featuring religious or non-religious ceremonies with Jaguar hearse or tractors or motorbikes to simple ‘no-fuss’ Direct Cremations. Whatever your needs, we are here to support you at every step of the way.
What is a Direct Cremation?
A Direct Cremation is essentially a funeral that is unattended by mourners and held at a time and place agreed between the funeral director and the crematorium. However, what’s included in a Direct Cremation can vary enormously. Some large, national cremation providers operate on a volume basis, often handling thousands of Direct Cremations every year. While this can make their services appear low-cost at first, it can also mean a more impersonal experience, with minimal contact and limited flexibility.
At R. Locke & Son, we take great pride in offering the same level of professional care and attention to detail for Direct Cremations as we do with any funeral. We will arrange for your loved one to be brought into our care at our local funeral home where they will be washed, cared for and dressed in their own clothes, according to your wishes.
Our Direct Cremations take place at one of our local crematoria, travelling by hearsette. Your loved one will be personally accompanied by a funeral director and pallbearer into the crematorium chapel. Music can be played at the committal and you will have peace of mind knowing when and where it will take place, and that R. Locke & Son will be there on your behalf.
Want to spend time with your loved one before the funeral?
Many national providers transport the deceased long distances to centralised cremation facilities, which are often far from the family home. This can add unnecessary delays and mean you have little control over where and when the cremation takes place. It also means you lose the opportunity to spend precious moments with your loved one before the funeral. That’s not the case with R. Locke & Son, where you’ll have the additional option of a viewing before the funeral, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your relative is being cared for in a dignified and respectful way.
Is a Direct Cremation right for me?
Whether you’re choosing a funeral plan in advance or arranging a Direct Cremation for the loss of a loved one, we will guide you through each decision at your own pace. We’ll encourage you to consider whether a Direct Cremation gives family and friends the opportunity to grieve and honour the life in a way that feels right. If it is, then we can help. And if you’re not sure or want to know more, it is a comfort to know, with us, you can change your mind, if you wish.
It is possible to attend a Direct Cremation with a few key members of the family with a short time of music and reflection to say goodbye. Intimate services can be arranged in our Brailes chapel for up to 22 people led by the family, celebrant or minister, and can be followed by tea and cake.
Ongoing support for you and your family
Our care doesn’t end when the funeral is over. We understand that finding your way through grief and loss takes time, support and kindness. That’s why we offer a range of aftercare and bereavement services designed to help you and your family adjust, remember and heal in your own way, at your own pace. Whether you’d like someone to talk to, community support or practical guidance, we’re here to support you.
A service built around your needs
While Direct cremation is a simple option, it doesn’t have to feel rushed or impersonal. At R. Locke & Son, every detail is handled with care and sensitivity by a team committed to accommodating your wishes with respect and professionalism.
